Shiawassee County – Paul Gilbert attended a WIOA Career Services orientation at the Owosso Service Center in March of 2018. He was referred to GSTMW through the Offender Success Program and was looking for guidance to becoming career ready and self-sufficient. He was interested in the manufacturing or food service industry.
Paul attended workshops, resume lab, completed a portfolio and attended several follow up appointments while on his path to career readiness and self-sufficiency. He obtained employment with Newport Coney Island as a dishwasher on March 20, 2018. Paul continued job searching with the assistance of his Career Coach and attended the Spring Job Fair in 2018. As a result, Paul was able to advance his career in April 2018 with a position at MTG as a full-time machine operator and his employment with Newport Coney Island ended.
Paul was able to move into his own apartment in May 2018 and began his next step to become self-sufficient. Paul continued to attend follow up appointments where he submitted documentation for assistance with his driving skills test, vehicle insurance, and registration, and GST Michigan Works! assisted with the cost of these items for Paul.
Paul completed the Offender Success Program requirements in less than a month. He was also able to obtain housing and his drivers license. Paul continues his journey and is still employed with MTG working 3rd shift making $13.54 per hour.
