ShaWanda Washington is an Adult participant from the Greater Flint Health Coalition’s Flint Healthcare Employment Opportunities (FHEO) Program, a GST Michigan Works! Service Provider. ShaWanda was visiting the GST Michigan Works! Service Center when she learned of the FHEO Program Prior to beginning her journey with the FHEO Program, ShaWanda was employed as a school bus driver but was seeking an opportunity to be better support her family. After attending an Information Session, ShaWanda determined that she would pursue a new career in healthcare.
ShaWanda followed the FHEO Program recruitment process and was accepted into the Program in August 2018. She shared that the “process was very tedious, but manageable for anyone serious about going back to school and finding employment.” ShaWanda also completed 120 of Professional Life Skills & Healthcare Career Exploration Training, which is hosted by Flint Strive. ShaWanda expressed that, “This training was like a mental boot camp but very effective, informative and helpful.” During her time in Professional Life Skills & Healthcare Exploration training, ShaWanda selected Phlebotomy as her training of choice.
ShaWanda entered into Phlebotomoy training at Mott Community College in September 2018. After completing the clinical portion of her training at Quest Diagnostic, ShaWanda graduated with a certificate in Phlebotomy in December 2018. ShaWanda worked diligently to seek employment after training and has been employed with Telecris Plasma since August 2019, where she enjoys working with a variety of patients. Within a year, ShaWanda was able to gain valuable workplace and phlebotomy skills that enabled her to obtain the healthcare career she had always aspired to have. ShaWanda states, “Everyone at FHEO and Strive were very helpful in making sure that I successfully completed the program”.
