Sandusky – “When life kicks you down, you feel hopeless. When I left your office, I felt hopeful.” This is how Lori Hall described her first experience with the GST Michigan Works! Sanilac Service Center. Lori initially visited the Sanilac Service Center in August of 2019 after a devastating job loss. She had been dismissed from her position after 6 years of dedicated service and (like many visitors to GSTMW Service Centers), Lori felt completely blindsided.
Losing your job is a very emotional experience. Through tears, Lori explained what had happened to Career Coach Sarah Weber and asked for help in filing her claim for Unemployment Benefits. She had never received UIA benefits before, so the claim filing process was daunting for her. Sarah explained the claims process and assisted Lori with setting up her MI Log in account and getting her connected to the service center resources necessary to file a claim.
Through this period of unemployment, Lori took advantage of the resume and cover letter writing assistance services during her job search. She also took part in Techno- Bytes and GPS workshops offered at the Service Center to update and expand her computer skills and job search reach.
“You guys made me feel smarter and better when you wrote my resume—you boosted my self-esteem,” Lori commented on the resume help that she received. She went on to say that she would not have had the words to describe herself and her qualifications had she not had resume help from GST Michigan Works!
After diligent job search, Lori was hired as a store manager at a grocery store in Yale at the end of October. The pay was comparable to that of her prior job and she felt confident in her ability to fulfill the duties of the position. She was in tears again when she came into the office to report her new job, but this time they were happy ones!
“You guys have gone above, beyond and further for me,” said Lori about her experience with the staff in the Sanilac Service Center. “You all are so kind, and I always leave your office feeling better than when I came in. Thank you.”
