Bad Axe – Cassandra St. Andrew came to GSTMW! Bad Axe Service Center in July of 2019 excited for a new career. She recently found herself in between jobs and was looking for funding to get back into the workforce. Cassie had previously been a stay-at-home mom to a military husband who was called away to serve our country. Because she had 4 small children at home, the timing was not quite right for her to pursue training. When her husband completed his military career, Cassie was able to find employment, just not in the medical field as she had hoped. She decided to take a CNA class and became certified as a Nurse Aide. Cassie had only been working for a few months when a family hardship happened; her father had cancer and needed family support. Cassie quit her CNA job to be there for her Dad. Fortunately, her Dad beat cancer and Cassie was able to enter the workforce again.
When she discovered that Mid Michigan College was holding a Phlebotomy class at the Huron Area Technical Center, she came back in to see the staff at the Bad Axe Service Center about scholarship funding for the class. Being without a job, she could not afford to pay for it on her own.
Cassie qualified for funding and started the class in September 2019. She loved the small class size and felt very comfortable in a specialty that makes some people very uncomfortable. Cassie completed the Phlebotomy class in November 2019 and is now working full time at Dr. Rostram’s Office in Bad Axe as a Phlebotomist. She has a career she truly loves in the medical field.
“Thanks to GST Michigan Works! for helping me with all of the funding and books so I was able to pursue my dream, graduate, and land a JOB that pays well with benefits! I couldn’t be more thankful for all your help!”
