Apprentice Success Story: The Masonry Apprentice

Meet Martin, a strong and dedicated person who endured various challenges, such as homelessness, while being a single parent. Martin encountered difficulties adjusting to civilian life and supporting his child after serving his country in the military.

Martin didn’t allow the difficulties to stop him from reclaiming his life and giving his family a bright future. With his strong work ethic and thirst for opportunity, Martin discovered an Apprenticeship with the Bricklayers Union, Local 2, known for providing skilled trade opportunities in the construction industry.

On May 1st, 2023, Martin committed himself to the training courses offered by the Bricklayers Union, Local 2 Apprenticeship, because he was eager to start down this new road. He worked hard to master the craft of bricklaying, becoming knowledgeable about numerous methods, security procedures, and fundamental building principles. Martin’s ambition to succeed and his unwavering tenacity indicate his dedication and passion for his newly discovered career.

Through GST Michigan Works!, Martin received the necessary support to ensure he finished his program. He will have access to tools, training financing, work clothes, and transportation support.

Martin commented, “I immensely appreciate GST Michigan Works! financial support. I am grateful to have GSTMW support as I pursue my goals and dreams because it shows how much they believe in the local talent in our community. I’m sure I can do a lot with the help of their [GSTMW] partnership and the Bricklayers Union.”

Martin acquired full-time employment as a bricklayer at Ram Construction on May 18th, 2023, and graduated from the program on June 9th, 2023, receiving a certificate of completion. His dedication and capacity for collaboration with project teams soon made him a vital member of each construction site’s team. Martin’s desire to provide for his family drives him to deliver exceptional work and go above and beyond consistently.

Martin has found success in both his professional and personal life. Thanks to his steady salary and network of supporters, he secured housing for himself and his child, establishing a safe and loving environment. The future seems bright for Martin’s son thanks to his determination and diligence.
