Hard Work Pays Off

Derrick, a dedicated single parent, had spent over two decades working as a contracted concrete finisher. The work was physically demanding, and the employment opportunities were inconsistent, making it difficult for him to plan for the future. Despite his experience, Derrick knew he needed to make a career change to find steady work, something that would provide stability and the possibility of retirement.

In his search for a better future, Derrick turned to GST Michigan Works! for support in obtaining his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). He hoped this would open the door to more reliable and fulfilling work.

Through GST Michigan Works!, Derrick received assistance with essential steps such as his MDOT physical, drug screening, and CDL training. Additionally, he was provided with leads for heavy equipment operator positions, which aligned with his long-term career goals.

Though Derrick had always found school challenging, he pushed forward and completed the classroom training with flying colors, earning a perfect score. His commitment paid off, and on March 3, 2025, he began full-time employment with HBL Enterprise.

The opportunity provided him with not just a paycheck, but the stability he had been seeking for his family and his future.
