Striking Out and Switching Gears
Joseph graduated from Wichita State University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in general business, however he was unable to complete an internship. It was extremely difficult to find full-time employment in his field without hands-on experience.
When Joseph sought assistance from GST Michigan Works!, he was substitute teaching and doing DoorDash to make ends meet. After several appointments and discussions about his goals, an opportunity for a mechanical engineering position was shared by a GST Michigan Works’ Business Services Professional. Joseph was encouraged to apply, but he was initially hesitant, thinking his lack of experience would disqualify him. However, after being urged to apply, Toledo Commutator interviewed him and saw that he was a great fit for the role they were looking to fill.
Given his need for additional training relative to the position, GST Michigan Works! arranged an On-the-Job Training (OJT) program for him, starting on October 28, 2024. Joseph successfully completed the OJT on December 10, 2024, and has happily remained employed with Toledo Commutator.
After struggling to make ends meet, Joseph now has full-time employment and benefits in his field of study at Toledo Commutator. His new role comes with a significant wage increase compared to his previous income, marking a major step forward in his career. Six months after starting his OJT, Joseph is still thriving in his position and has expressed deep appreciation for the coaching and guidance he received to help him transition into this new career.
