From Cashier to Pharmacy Technician

From Cashier to Pharmacy Technician

For as long as Shelby could remember, becoming a Pharmacy Technician was her dream. But life always seemed to get in the way—until June 2024, when she discovered an online Pharmacy Tech program through GST Michigan Works!, Degree Forward, and Stepful. The flexible, self-paced format allowed her to finally pursue her goal without disrupting her life.

The program included two weekly Zoom classes, group projects, and Saturday homework deadlines. With support from Angel at GST Michigan Works! and Laura at Degree Forward, Shelby enrolled and began in July 2024.

In August, just as her coursework picked up, Shelby landed a customer service/pharmacy cashier job at Walgreens—her first step into the field. She balanced work and school, and by October, graduated in the top 10% of her class.

Determined to succeed, Shelby scheduled her state exam for November. Though she didn’t pass on the first try, she doubled down on studying while gaining hands-on experience at Walgreens. In December, just before retaking the exam, she was offered a Pharmacy Tech position—which she accepted immediately. She passed the exam later that month and officially became a certified Pharmacy Technician.

“Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for the support I received from Angel, Laura, and my team at Walgreens,” Shelby said. “The journey wasn’t always easy, but it proved that perseverance, timing, and the right support can help you achieve your dreams.”

Shelby also completed her externship at Walgreens, allowing her to earn income while fulfilling school requirements. She started as a Pharmacy Cashier in August of 2024, transitioning to a Pharmacy Tech Intern in December, and finished the Walgreens orientation and training by March of 2025.

Recently, Shelby shared with her Career Coach that her colleagues had nominated her “Employee of the Month”—an achievement that reflects how far she’s come.

“Taking the leap in July 2024 was the best decision I’ve ever made,” Shelby said. “No matter the setbacks or challenges, it’s worth it to never give up on your goals.”
