Unlocking Potential Through Robotics Training
Located in the John Conley Industrial Park in Lapeer, Urgent Design and Manufacturing is part of the 3-Dimensional Services Group, known for its cutting-edge engineering and design capabilities. The company specializes in producing high-quality prototype parts for industries ranging from military and medical to automotive, communications, and household appliances.
Recently, Urgent Design found themselves facing a frustrating challenge: their FANUC CRX-Series collaborative robots were significantly underutilized. While they had invested in the robots and the accompanying Tablet Teach Pendants (TPs), the ROI was falling short simply because their staff hadn’t been trained to fully operate and program the equipment.
During a Going PRO Talent Fund (GPTF) Fact-Finding meeting, the urgency of the training need became clear. However, relying on GPTF funding could delay the solution, and there was no guarantee of an award. That’s when their GST Michigan Works! Business Solutions Professional (BSP) suggested an alternative—the Industry Infinity Incumbent Worker Training (IWT) grant. This is a great illustration of how valuable it is for the system to have the ability to braid funding streams to find the best and most appropriate source for businesses and job seekers.
Working quickly together, the team completed the paperwork and secured approval. Just two weeks later, training was underway. Three employees participated in hands-on instruction and earned certificates in CRX-Series Collaborative Robot Operations and Programming from FANUC Academy. Urgent Design and Manufacturing was reimbursed $6,678.00 for the training costs through the IWT grant.
The training didn’t just deliver skills, it sparked inspiration. One of the trainees, Nate, stated, “I could compare the training to my cell phone usage. The more you learn about it, the more it can do—and then the more you want to try different things and learn more!”
After the training, the impact was quickly evident. Maggie, the company’s HR Coordinator, shared, “The class equipped us with essential skills in robotics, particularly with FANUC’s CRX series. With automation becoming increasingly vital in modern manufacturing, this training allows us to implement more efficient, precise, and faster production processes. Understanding robotics opens the door to optimizing workflows, reducing human error, and improving safety.”
She also emphasized the broader value of this investment, “By upskilling the workforce, we can stay competitive in the global market. This increased productivity can lead to greater job security and higher wages within the area, while also attracting more business and potentially new manufacturing clients to the region.”
This serves as a great reminder to BSPs to listen closely to the employer and always be ready to think outside the box. Thanks to quick action and creative problem-solving, Urgent Design and Manufacturing has not only increased the value of their robotic equipment but also empowered their workforce for the future.
