Finding Her Team

Carrie has always had a desire to help others. That interest guided her through several roles, as a Certified Nurse Assistant, a Dental Assistant, and a Paraprofessional. With two young children to support, she took pride in her work but knew she needed to secure a full-time position with reliable benefits. The challenge was bridging the gap from her varied assistant positions to a more stable career path.

Carrie was already familiar with GST Michigan Works! through financial literacy and resume workshops offered by a Youth Career Coach who visited her high school. When she decided to pursue certification as a Medical Assistant, a field that would allow her to continue helping people while providing better pay and benefits, she knew exactly where to turn.

In January, Carrie visited the GST Michigan Works! office in Sanilac County. There, she connected with a Career Coach who listened to her goals and scheduled her for an orientation. Her Career Coach quickly directed her to the Sanilac Career Center, where a Medical Assistant class was set to begin in just a couple of weeks.

Carrie jumped at the chance. She successfully completed the class, demonstrating her dedication and aptitude for the medical field. Her hard work paid off, and she found her new professional home with the team at Aspire in Deckerville.

This career change was transformative for Carrie and her family. She received a $5 an hour increase in pay and moved from a part-time, school-year-only schedule to a full-time, year-round position with benefits. With the help of GST Michigan Works!, Carrie achieved the stability and professional growth she had been striving for, while continuing to pursue her passion for helping people.
