Strengthening Workforce Development

When a fire alarm sounds, there is no negotiating with time. In that instant, preparation is everything, and preparation is built long before the first spark.

Since 1958, Wolverine Fire Protection Co., headquartered in Mt. Morris, Michigan, has stood as a steady guardian of communities across the region and beyond. As a family-owned company with national reach, they design, fabricate, install, and maintain advanced fire suppression, detection, and alarm systems that protect schools, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, and commercial spaces. Their work does more than meet code. It preserves life. It protects property. It safeguards the economic stability of the communities they serve. Yet the true strength of Wolverine Fire Protection is not found only in steel pipe or system design. It’s found in people.

The company’s commitment to workforce development is not new, nor is its partnership with GST Michigan Works! in Genesee County. This is a relationship built over years, grounded in trust, aligned goals, and a shared belief that strong businesses and strong communities grow together.

Through continued engagement with GST Michigan Works! and recurring utilization of the Going Pro Talent Fund, Wolverine has strategically invested in its workforce year after year. Most recently, the company was reimbursed with $46,222 to support advanced, industry-specific training for its Michigan-based team. These funds do more than offset cost; they accelerate capability. They allow Wolverine to elevate skill sets, strengthen compliance expertise, improve response precision, and create clear career pathways for both new and existing employees.

This sustained collaboration reflects a deeper truth: workforce development is not a one-time initiative. It is an ongoing commitment.

“As one of the owners of Wolverine Fire Protection Co, I am so grateful for the resources GST Michigan Works! provides us. With the help of the Going Pro Talent Fund, we have been able to provide opportunities to many local residents starting out their careers in the fire protection industry. Building leaders for the next generation is our goal, and proper training is key to that success. Thank you for [your] help in making this possible.” – Amy Shanks

When workforce strategy is intentional, and partnerships are cultivated over time, talent pipelines strengthen, retention improves, and institutional knowledge deepens. The economic impact multiplies through high-wage career opportunities, increased productivity, and enhanced public safety infrastructure.

For nearly seven decades, Wolverine Fire Protection has protected what matters most. Through an enduring partnership with GST Michigan Works! and disciplined investment in people, they are not only installing systems, but they are also building leaders, strengthening families, and reinforcing the long-term economic resilience of Genesee County. When preparation is sustained and partnership is intentional, a community does more than endure; it thrives.
