Building a Future, One Step at a Time

Building a Future, One Step at a Time

After earning his bachelor’s degree, Logan found himself standing at a crossroads. He had always envisioned a career in law, but committing the time and financial investment required for law school was a significant decision. Before taking that next step, he wanted to gain firsthand experience to ensure it was the right path for him.

Through the GST Michigan Works! Young Professionals Program, he was given the opportunity to participate in a 12-week paid work experience with Main Law. What began as an opportunity to explore a career quickly became a life-changing experience.

Throughout the 12 weeks, he immersed himself in the day-to-day responsibilities of a law office, gaining valuable hands-on experience while learning directly from Attorney Heather Main. Each week brought new challenges, new knowledge, and greater confidence. As he observed the meaningful impact attorneys have on their clients and community, his uncertainty transformed into determination.

By the end of the program, he wasn’t just considering law school—he was actively applying. The work experience provided the clarity, motivation, and confidence he needed to pursue his long-term career goals.

His journey with Main Law, however, did not end when the paid work experience concluded. Recognizing his dedication, work ethic, and potential, Attorney Heather Main invited him to remain with the firm as he navigates the law school application process. In doing so, she has become not only an employer, but also a mentor—offering encouragement, guidance, and a wealth of knowledge that will continue to shape his future.

This story is a powerful reminder of the impact that meaningful work-based learning and mentorship can have on a young professional’s career. Thanks to the support of the GST Michigan Works! Young Professionals Program and the commitment of community partners like Main Law, one young graduate has gained more than work experience—he has gained confidence, direction, and a strong foundation for a promising future in the legal profession.
