Investing in Skills to Strengthen the Future
American Rheinmetall, a valued manufacturer in Lapeer County and a leader in the government defense industry, specializes in highly skilled machining and welding. As the company continues to grow, leadership recognized the importance of developing its workforce from within while ensuring experienced tradespeople continued to build specialized skills.
Like many manufacturers, Rheinmetall faced the challenge of moving entry-level employees into more advanced roles while providing ongoing training for its highly skilled workforce. Coordinating internal training at the right time and with the necessary expertise was often difficult, making external training opportunities an important part of the company’s workforce development strategy.
With assistance from GST Michigan Works!, American Rheinmetall secured a Going PRO Talent Fund award that provided training opportunities for 52 of the company’s 97 employees. Working with the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC), employees completed Blueprint Reading and Core Tools training, strengthening technical knowledge and enhancing the skills needed to support quality manufacturing and continued operational success.
The investment produced measurable results. Employees gained valuable technical expertise that increased production capabilities and strengthened the company’s ability to meet customer demands. The enhanced skills also prompted a company-wide wage review, resulting in wage increases for many employees and recognizing the value of their expanded knowledge and contributions.
By investing in workforce development, American Rheinmetall reinforced a culture of continuous improvement where employee growth and business success go hand in hand. The training strengthened individual capabilities, enhanced overall performance, and positioned the company to remain competitive in an industry where precision, quality, and skilled talent are essential.
