Nurturing Growth, Saving Jobs, & Securing the Future Through Training & Innovation
Domico Med-Device is a medical device manufacturer with over 40 years of history in Genesee County. The company was founded in 1975 and has since gone through several owners, most recently the Fenton location was subject to a divestiture in June 2018 from the larger company it was once a part of (TIDI Products). The new owner is a local Fenton resident and has been with the company for over 25 years. Due to the purchase of the company, the new owner was able to save 83 local jobs; the alternative being to close the facility.
Located in Fenton, MI they have over 75,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Domico Med-Device currently has nearly 100 employees. They provide quality medical device products, focusing on serving the markets of diagnostic imaging, interventional medicine, and the operating room. Their product offerings include patient positioning aids made from both foam and carbon fiber, MRI coil foam enclosures, hardware assemblies, and non-sterile disposable covers for positioning aides. Domico’s primary customers are OEMs who sell their products around the world. They are currently working towards having more Domico Med-Device branded products, of their own creation, to increase profits and put business back into Michigan’s economy.
Domico Med-Device was $42,977.82 through the Going PRO Talent Fund which allowed their business to grow its employees’ skillsets and not allow the continuous improvement of their staff to become stagnant. With the extreme labor shortage suffered in 2021, it is more important than ever that businesses continue to engage their current staff and support upskilling them, so they do not move on and attain knowledge to help grow the business. They specifically chose to participate in the LEAN training because it helped them streamline their business practices and become more efficient therefore having less direct labor and overhead costs.
Domico cannot afford the high rates of turnover to continue in production and they also want to avoid a “great resignation” impact on other key areas of their business. By investing in their employees, they will hopefully choose to stay loyal to their current employer. The funds will help Domico work on the business rather than solely in the business.
Training is critical to their success due to the age of their current workforce. Over 30% is above the age of 55. Therefore, they need to ensure that the up-and-coming workforce is sufficiently trained to step in when their colleagues retire. Having gaps in knowledge or skillsets due to retirements can put a strain on the business operations running smoothly, products being delivered timely, and maintaining positive relationships with current customers. The fact that Domico Med-Device has internal employees who are ready to step up and fill in gaps when needed is essential to their success and continued growth.
