From Sales Representative to CDL Truck Driver

Genesee County – Darrin came into GST Michigan Works! in Fenton to meet with a Career Coach to see what types of employment he was capable of besides the sales industry. He worked as a Sales Representative for the last ten years and experienced a great deal of instability. Darrin needed a stable income to support his family more effectively.  He decided to contact GST Michigan Works! in Fenton to research available opportunities.

Through the resources at GST Michigan Works!, Darrin located and enrolled in a CDL A Truck Driving School based in Sterling Heights. After completing his DOT Physical & Drug test, he was accepted to start training at US Truck Driving School. Through career coaching and additional support at GST, he was able to continue working and attended training on the weekends. GST Michigan Works! assisted Darrin with tuition, mileage, and work clothing to get him started.

The school provided GST with feedback about what a focused student Darrin was and that he did a great job! While attending training, he also received additional endorsements that would make him even more employable! In total, Darrin received his CDL A truck driver with doubles & triples, hazmat & tanker endorsements. His career coach then helped him create a new resume that reflected these accomplishments. 

Darrin was challenged through the process as he continued to work full-time while in training. However, he persevered and changed his future! He and his family are so grateful for the assistance he received from GST Michigan Works! which helped make this career move happen.

Because his training was on the weekend, Darrin’s transition to completion and starting his new career was a smooth one. He is now employed full-time as a CDL A Truck Driver at Universal Logistics!
