Jared’s Journey Toward Full-Time High Wage Employment

Lapeer County – Jared had a full-time job at Home Depot but wanted more. He wanted a career in the healthcare industry, in the non-traditional path of nursing.  Jared applied and was accepted into the nursing program at Mott Community College. He decided that to give his full attention to his studies, he would need to quit his job, though it was hard to cover all the extra expenses required for the training. A fellow student told him about the help that  GST Michigan Works! could offer, and he quickly made contact with the Lapeer office.

 After determining Jared’s eligibility for the program, he was able to receive funding to assist him with tuition, mileage support, and required books and equipment for the program. He worked hard and graduated at the end of June 2023.

 Upon graduation, GST Michigan Works! assisted with his license and testing fees, background check and scrubs to start in his new career. Jared was soon hired full-time at Ascension Genesys Hospital in the oncology unit as a registered nurse. His wage is nearly twice what he was making in his former career, and he has benefits and a 36-hour work week.
