Heading North to Learn Welding

Charles, a recent graduate of Caseville High School in 2024, had always been drawn to hands-on work. Along with his high school education, he attended the Huron Area Technical Center, where he completed the Power Technology Program, igniting his interest in welding. After gaining experience working at one of the local fabrication companies, Charles realized that welding was not just a job—it was a career he wanted to pursue.
Eager to expand his skills, Charles registered at the Industrial Arts Institute in Onaway, a school known for its specialized welding programs. However, he soon discovered that the institute did not accept federal student aid, leaving him in need of financial assistance to pursue his training. That’s when he turned to GST Michigan Works! in Huron County for help.
In October, Charles was approved for funding, which allowed him to begin his welding training the following January. With his tuition covered, he immersed himself in his studies at the Industrial Arts Institute. Charles quickly excelled in his classes, mastering various welding techniques, including different types of welds and cuts. His enthusiasm and dedication to learning were evident, and he earned a Certificate of Comprehensive Industrial Welding Completion, along with the AWS Welder Qualification, upon graduation on May 17th.
By August 5th, just a few months after completing his training, Charles had secured a full-time position at Richmond Steel, back in Huron County. The job not only offered him a starting wage $2 more per hour than his previous job, but also the opportunity to increase his earnings over time as he gained more experience in the field.
Reflecting on his journey, Charles expressed his satisfaction with the decision to pursue welding and complete his training. “I really enjoyed welding school and would definitely recommend it to other students,” he said, proud of the career path he had chosen and excited about his future in the welding industry.
