Upskilling from Within: Harbor Beach Hospital’s Apprenticeship Success

Harbor Beach Community Hospital, a small rural hospital nestled in Huron County, often faces challenges in finding qualified employees with the skills and certifications needed to fill critical roles. To address this, the hospital has taken a proactive approach—investing in its workforce through apprenticeships and support from the Going PRO Talent Fund.

In 2023, the hospital launched a Surgical Technologist Apprenticeship Program. Building on that momentum, they expanded in 2024 to include a Medical Assistant Apprenticeship, working closely with the GST Michigan Works! Apprenticeship Team to get the new program approved and running.

Two current employees expressed a strong interest in advancing their careers. Sarah, already a Certified Medical Assistant, completed her Surgical Technologist training and now supports the operating room team as needed, while continuing in her CMA role. Kari, previously working as a Health Information Management Specialist, transitioned into a full-time Medical Assistant position.

To support their development, the hospital applied for and received a Going PRO Talent Fund grant, which helped cover the cost of classroom instruction and on-the-job training for both roles.

This investment paid off in more ways than one. Both employees gained new skills, higher earning potential, and greater job satisfaction. The hospital was able to fill long-standing open positions with trusted internal talent. Kari, who completed her training online through the Sanilac Career Center, shared that the flexibility was ideal for her situation as a single parent, and she loves her new role as a Medical Assistant.

By using apprenticeships and strategic funding support, Harbor Beach Community Hospital is not only filling key positions but also creating a workplace culture that values growth, opportunity, and loyalty.
