Single Mom Becomes Occupational Therapist

Single Mom Becomes Occupational Therapist

Becky Detgen started attending Mott Community College in the fall of 2014 while taking care of two kids as a single mom and working as a part-time server. She completed her Associate Degree in Applied Science Occupational Therapy Assistant with high honors in August of 2019.

GST Michigan Works! was able to assist Becky with tuition support, mileage, the Michigan Occupational Therapist Assistant Exam, Certification Exam, car repairs, license plate renewal, and encouragement the whole way through.

When talking with her Career Coach about her employment goals, Becky’s #1 preference was to work with children.  Her second choice working in a hospital or facility.

In February of 2020, Becky obtained her Occupational Therapy License and later that year began working a subcontract position at the Huron County Medical Care Facility, full time making an excellent salary far above what she earned as a server.

After working for 5 months at the Huron Medical Care Facility, Becky was offered a position at Huron ISD at an even higher wage, and a position that would allow her to achieve her dream of working with kids.  Today, Becky loves helping her students achieve their academic goals, she loves her job and the staff she works with!
