Tuscola - Matthew walked into GST Michigan Works! seeking assistance attaining his CDL certification. Unfortunately, Matthew had no previous work experience. He also did not meet the reading score required to enter training and expect a successful completion. After several attempts, Matthew was not ready to give up. He was introduced to Dan, the Family Literacy Tutor, who provides weekly tutoring onsite at our Caro Service Center. Dan printed off materials and homework for Matt to study at home. One week after taking the provided materials home, Matt returned to the Caro office to re-take his assessment. The result was a significant improvement in his score, falling just one point shy of the requirement. Matt's Career Coach advocated for him to move forward with training, coordinating with 160 Driving Academy to allow Matt to begin training. With all partners encouraging and supporting Matt, he was able to pass his permit test from the Secretary of State and go on to complete his Class A CDL certification! Because of this training, Matthew accepted a position with Carrier Transit in October 2021.
