Assistance and Guidance Gets a Family Back on Their Feet

Huron - Shelly reached out to GST Michigan Works! in search of funding for vocational training and a credential. She met with a Career Coach in the Bad Axe Service Center and completed the WIOA application for a CNA course at the Tuscola Tech Center. Though there were scheduling challenges due the pandemic, Shelly was able to persevere. The greatest challenge was when externship opportunities became extremely difficult to arrange due to the pandemic. Through several “false starts”, Shelly and her Career Coach continued to seek creative ways to arrange for her to complete an externship, prepare and search for full-time work that would help support her family.

After nearly 9 months of seeking and riding out the waves of the shifting COVID crisis, Shelly accepted an offer of work for Scheurer Hospital Wellness Clinic located in the Caseville and Bad Axe elementary schools. Shelly negotiated her first 60 days of employment to be her externship. The hours worked perfectly with her children’s school schedules, and the pay rate was what her family needed to get back on their feet. Shelly loves her job in the schools and the team she works with. She has greater opportunities to work with more schools throughout Huron County as the Wellness Clinics expand. She is grateful for the assistance and guidance she received from GST Michigan Works!
