Genesee County Sheriff’s Office Hosts an OWI Expungement Fair

On February 19, 2022, the Michigan Clean Slate law extended set-aside to those that have first-time operating while intoxicated convictions.

FLINT, MI – Several leaders have come together to sponsor the OWI expungement fair: the Genesee County Sheriff, the State of Michigan Attorney General, IGNITE, Mott Community College Workforce & Development, Safe & Just, Legal Services, Chase Bank and GST MI Works! There is no cost for the fair or the expungement process for a first time OWI violation. The event will occur at the Office of the Genesee County Sheriff, located at 1002 Saginaw St, Flint, MI 48502.

According to the department of the Attorney General:

  • Only one operating while impaired/intoxicated offense can be set-aside in a person’s lifetime.
  • If a person has more than one operating while intoxicated conviction, they are ineligible to set aside any of those convictions, including their first-time operating while intoxicated conviction.
  • If the operating while intoxicated caused an injury or death it is ineligible to be set aside.
  • The waiting period to have a first-time operating while intoxicated offense expunged from your record is 5 years.

“Having a criminal record can hamper a person’s success in many facets of their life. From attaining affordable and safe housing, gaining advanced certifications to help them earn more on the job and even the inability to volunteer at their child’s school,” said GST MI Works CEO Jody Kerbyson. “We feel it’s vital to allow those who have served their time a second chance at success and we’re here to help them get it!”

The fair takes place on Wednesday, May 4th, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. GST MI Works! will be present and can assist with fees associated with getting one’s record expunged. Those interested in attending the fair should register for the event at gstmiworks.org/CleanSlate.
