Stacey’s Journey

Genesee County –  Stacey’s story began at the Cleveland Job Corps Center, where he stated he was angry and mad at the world and struggled to find his path. An enlightening conversation with his teacher, Mr. Houston, changed everything. Inspired to pursue a career in Security, Stacey’s aspirations aligned with a connection Mr. Houston made at the Flint Genesee Job Corps Center, introducing him to the Homeland Security team. Moving to Flint wasn’t without its hurdles, but as Stacey embraced this new chapter, he found newfound confidence. Engaging in extracurricular activities and teaming up with GST Michigan Works! played a pivotal role in his transformation. Collaborating with GST Michigan Works! and the JMG program marked a turning point, leading to a successful paid work experience in Security. GST Michigan Works! was able to assist Stacey with work clothes and a laptop to assist with classes. 

Stacey’s growth extended beyond his professional journey. Participating in Leadership Day with JMG at YMCA’s Camp Ohiyesa allowed him to refine his leadership skills through hands-on activities. This momentum continued to a significant trip to Washington, DC, where he effectively represented the youth perspective in a Job Corps event. Stacey flourished in his personal life and excelled academically by obtaining his Homeland Security Trade Certification in a swift six and a half months. By June 2023, Stacey was ready to pursue his life beyond Job Corps.

Recently, Stacey shared his experiences and strategies to overcome adversity at different Michigan High Schools to youth, honing his public speaking skills. He acknowledges that his journey towards becoming the man he is today, a leader and a Big Brother Role Model, was nurtured by the support of Flint Genesee Job Corps and JMG. Now, Stacey is a full-time Security Guard at Hurley Medical Center, earning a good salary, owning a vehicle, and has his own apartment. His journey is a testament to growth and determination, and we take pride in witnessing Stacey continue his path.
