From Student to Manufacturing Engineer
In July of 2024, Landon walked into the GST Michigan Works! Tuscola Service Center. He was entering his final year at Saginaw Valley State University, pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Like many students, Landon was seeking support to ease the financial burden of tuition and reached out to GST Michigan Works! to explore eligibility for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant.
Landon qualified for the WIOA program, and GST Michigan Works! was proud to stand behind him as he continued to pursue his academic and career goals. Throughout the year, Landon proved to be a driven and hardworking individual. While maintaining solid grades, he worked full-time as a student intern at General Motors, demonstrating commitment, resilience, and an unstoppable work ethic.
Through the WIOA program, GST Michigan Works! was able to lessen the financial pressure Landon faced. The team assisted in covering his tuition, books, and necessary supplies, allowing him to focus more fully on his studies and less on how he would pay for them.
Thanks to his dedication and the support of GST Michigan Works! Landon successfully earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Even more exciting, he was hired full-time by General Motors as a Manufacturing Engineer shortly after graduation.
When asked about the challenges he faced and how the program helped, Landon shared, “A couple of challenges I faced with my education were time management and being able to pay for tuition. GST Michigan Works! provided me with financial support, which allowed me to finish my last year of college without going into major debt. Their assistance also allowed me to decrease my hours a bit while attending school, so I could focus on my education in order to excel.”
GST Michigan Works! is proud to have played a part in his success and looks forward to seeing what he achieves next.
