Turning Passion into Purpose

When Kailey visited the GST Michigan Works! Owosso office, she was seeking more than just a job—she was looking for a path to long-term stability and purpose. A single mother of two, Kailey had been working seasonal jobs in tax preparation and accounting, while also serving as an on-call firefighter—an experience that sparked her passion for emergency services. She knew becoming a certified EMT would provide steady employment while allowing time to care for her children, but training costs stood in her way.

With the guidance of her Career Coach, Kailey fully committed to the process. She participated in career exploration, interviewed professionals in the field, attended a financial wellness workshop, and researched EMT programs. Her hard work paid off when she was approved for training assistance, and in October 2024, she began the EMT program at Corunna Area Ambulance Service. She successfully completed her training in December and passed all required certifications.

While continuing seasonal work during tax season, Kailey actively pursued EMT opportunities. With the support of her Career Coach and the training she received, she secured a full-time EMT position at Patriot Ambulance in Flint in March 2025. She now serves on a rig in partnership with the Grand Blanc City Fire Department and has been thriving in the role.

“Being a single mom, I’m so grateful to now work shifts that allow me to support my children and still have quality time with them,” Kailey shared. “The best part of my job is getting to help people every day. I’m so thankful to GST Michigan Works! for helping me find a career I truly love.”
