Transition: Laborer to Caretaker

Sandusky – In March of 2021, Kevin Parrott, reached out the GST Michigan Works! office to inquire about a career change.  He wanted to find a career that would be able to keep him working year-round and give him the time to spend with family and friends.  He had previously worked in both construction and manufacturing.  He needed to find work life and home life balance.  Kevin began the process of researching possible careers that would also keep him in Sanilac County.

His Career Coach, Cindy Zambron, set up an appointment to discuss his options and complete the paperwork. He decided he wanted to become a Certified Nurse Aid.  As soon as he was approved for funding, he contacted the Sanilac Career Center to sign up for the next Certified Nurse Aid class.  He completed with no problems or issues; this was a good career choice for him.

Shortly after receiving his state certification, he found employment at Autumnwood of Deckerville.  Kevin’s work schedule allows him to work three 12-hour shifts, giving him plenty of time to spend at home with his wife and daughters, while providing for his family. When asked to be a featured success story he originally declined not wanting to be the center of attention.

He later reconsidered stating how grateful he was to have this opportunity to advance his career. Kevin enjoys what he is doing now, having found his work life and home life balance.
