Genesee County – Odis grew weary of his current employment and yearned for a fulfilling career. He had a passion for drywalling but needed more formal training. However, when he discovered the Drywall Finishing Program at Detroit Training Center, he was eager to learn more about it. Odis took the initiative to contact the training facility for additional information on the program. Detroit Training Center recognized his potential and suggested that he contact GST MI Works! to determine if he qualified for WIOA funding to assist with the program’s expenses.

With the support and guidance of his compassionate Career Coach, Odis secured the necessary funding for the Drywall Finisher Program at the Detroit Training Center. Recognizing the importance of proper attire and equipment, his Career Coach went above and beyond to assist Odis in purchasing work boots and clothing essential for his training. Additionally, WIOA funding provided him with the means to cover auto repairs and mileage expenses, ensuring that Odis could commute to Detroit daily for training without any hindrances.

Upon completing the program, Odis couldn’t contain his pride as he presented his certificate of completion to his Career Coach. He acquired expertise in Drywall Finishing and certificates in Drywall Hanging, Painting, OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, and EPA Lead RRP during his training. This remarkable achievement is a testament to Odis’s determination and the unwavering support he received from his Career Coach and the WIOA Program.

Just one week after completing the Drywall Finisher Program, Odis was fortunate to secure employment as a Drywall Hanger at The Prime Brothers. Thanks to his enrollment in the WIOA program, Odis was provided with the necessary drywalling tools to excel in his new role. This support proved immensely valuable as he embarked on his new career journey. “I appreciate MI Works so much. I don’t know what I would have done without everyone’s willingness to help me embark on this new journey,” said Odis.
