Cooking Up A Successful Future!
Genesee County – Deaven’s remarkable journey toward a flourishing career in the culinary arts was sparked in June 2022 when they enrolled in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Youth program and Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates. Their story is a shining example of how these programs can empower young individuals to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.
Deaven, a Grand Blanc High School graduate, had a deep passion for cooking that had been kindled during their time at the Genesee Career Institute. Throughout high school, they diligently pursued knowledge and skills in the field of Hospitality and Tourism, with a specific focus on culinary arts. This educational path gave them a solid foundation in cooking techniques, food presentation, and creating memorable dining experiences. Deaven was determined to transform this passion into a lifelong career, but they needed the right tools and support to take the next steps.
Before embarking on their college journey at Mott Community College, where they aimed to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts, Deaven recognized the importance of gaining practical work experience. They understood that real-world exposure was essential for refining culinary skills and building confidence, effective communication, and teamwork abilities vital in the fast-paced culinary industry.
Deaven’s dedication, coupled with the support provided by the WIOA Program, led them to secure paid work experience, which proved invaluable in teaching them essential life skills such as time management, adaptability, and thriving under high-pressure circumstances.
However, Deaven needed some help with their path to culinary excellence. Transportation was a challenge as they didn’t have a driver’s license. Thanks to the WIOA Youth funding, Deaven received bus passes, ensuring they could commute to work and college while working on obtaining their license. Deaven was also able to receive assistance purchasing the necessary culinary tools, uniforms, textbooks, and course materials upon enrolling at Mott Community College.
Deaven’s unwavering commitment and hard work paid off, and their culinary journey flourished. While pursuing a degree in Culinary Arts at Mott Community College, they have received a remarkable opportunity to give back and share their knowledge by teaching a culinary class. They are also now the Vice President of the culinary club. Deaven became an inspiration to aspiring chefs who were following in their footsteps.
Deaven’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the essential support that programs like WIOA Youth provide. Deaven’s journey exemplifies the incredible possibilities that can unfold when passion meets the right resources and guidance.
