From HVAC to Hauling Across America

William came to GST Michigan Works! after being laid off from his job as an HVAC Technician. He needed assistance filing for unemployment and registering for work. Over the course of his 20 weeks of benefits, we worked closely with him on a bi-weekly basis, getting to know not just his work history but also his future goals.

As our professional relationship grew, William began to share his excitement about a new opportunity. He had been doing ride-alongs with a friend in the car hauling industry and was intrigued by the idea of making a career shift. One afternoon, he came in eager to discuss a promising opportunity to start driving on his own. The only thing standing in his way: he needed a CDL-A license.

He was quickly paired with a Career Coach, and together they moved fast to enroll him in the WIOA Dislocated Worker program. With this funding, GST Michigan Works! covered the cost of his CDL-A training at 160 Driving Academy, as well as his required DOT physical. William completed the program and earned his certificate.

He began working as planned for a car-hauling and flatbed delivery company based in Saginaw. While he loved the work, he realized the company wasn’t the right long-term fit. After connecting with friends in the industry and reflecting on his future, William returned to GST Michigan Works! to share a bold new vision: he was ready to become his own boss.

William has since begun building his own car hauling business, transporting vehicles for individuals and companies across the U.S. He already has contacts lined up, eager for him to handle their vehicle logistics for both personal and commercial needs.
