Going the Distance

Qwonda faced challenges related to her background and financial barriers, but she was determined to create a better life. At the time, she was unemployed and eager to earn her CDL-A license. After being out of work for over two years, she completed the Workplace Excellence workshops in GST Michigan Works! Flint Service Center, which she found very beneficial.

In September 2024, Qwonda began her CDL-A training at Polyservice Driving School. GST Michigan Works! was able to support her by covering tuition costs, MDOT/DT requirements, training clothing, and mileage reimbursement during her training. Through persistence and hard work, Qwonda successfully completed her CDL-A training in November 2024.

After finishing her training, she began searching for employment but faced difficulties due to her background. She felt discouraged when opportunities slipped away. She just wanted someone to give her a chance. Despite these setbacks, Qwonda didn’t give up. In June 2025, her determination paid off when she secured a full-time position at Corning, earning a great wage and benefits.

When transportation challenges arose due to her job being 55 miles from home, GST Michigan Works! stepped in again. We assisted her with a vehicle purchase through the Talent & Growth Initiative so she could continue working.

Today, Qwonda is thriving in her position at Corning. She expresses deep gratitude for the program, saying, “I am glad I came through the program and was able to receive the assistance I did. It changed my life for the better.” Through her perseverance and desire for self-improvement, Qwonda overcame her barriers and laid the foundation for a successful future.
