The Power of Persistence

Sydney took an important step toward achieving her employment goals as a Job Corps student when she enrolled in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Program through GST Michigan Works! Like many job seekers, Sydney understood that finding stable employment required persistence, commitment, and the willingness to embrace new opportunities. She was determined to secure meaningful work that would allow her to gain valuable experience while working toward career growth and independence.

Throughout her participation in the program, Sydney has demonstrated a positive attitude, dedication, and a strong desire to succeed. Working alongside her Career Coach, she received individualized guidance, career planning, and ongoing support to help her navigate the workforce and achieve her employment goals. On November 4, 2025, Sydney began a paid work experience at Hurley Medical Center, where she had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, strengthen her workplace skills, and become familiar with a professional healthcare environment. Her paid work experience was extended three times, demonstrating her continued commitment, exceptional work ethic, and the confidence Hurley Medical Center had in her abilities. Each extension reflected the positive impression she made on her supervisors and her readiness for permanent employment.

With the support of the WIOA program and her Career Coach, Sydney successfully reached an important milestone in her career journey. On April 3, 2026, Sydney was officially hired at Hurley Medical Center as a Lobby Shop Associate. Throughout her journey, WIOA provided supportive services that helped remove barriers to employment and prepared her for long-term success. She received assistance with obtaining professional work attire, along with incentives that recognized her successful completion of her paid work experience and her achievement of securing permanent employment. These resources, combined with Sydney’s determination, persistence, and exceptional work ethic, helped her successfully transition from a program participant to a valued member of the Hurley Medical Center team.

Sydney’s accomplishments reflect her hard work, perseverance, and willingness to take the next step toward her future. She continues to build her skills and experience as she works toward long-term career success.

Sydney’s advice to others: “Growth doesn’t happen overnight. Keep showing up, keep believing, and trust that every day moves you closer to your goals.”
