Pivoting to Healthcare

Shylo has held a diverse range of positions. She’s been a rural mail carrier, a cook, a cashier, a welder, and a press operator. She hoped to find a career where she could share the caring side of herself.

Through her research, she determined that she would thrive as a Clinical Medical Assistant. After researching and discussing with friends and family, she decided that Ross Medical Education Center in Port Huron was her best option. She enrolled in the upcoming class, filled out all the financial aid forms, and figured out how much she would need to pay out of pocket.

After attending her first class, Shylo heard that GST Michigan Works! helps students with tuition and sometimes transportation costs. She decided to visit the GST Michigan Works! office in Sandusky to see if she qualified for any type of assistance. After meeting with a Career Coach to discuss her situation, she learned she would need to act quickly, since she was already enrolled at Ross Medical Education Center. As it turns out, she had time to complete the application process that day and was determined eligible.

During her training, she struggled with her work hours and commute. She decided to take a temporary job that was closer to home until she could officially start her career.

Shylo made a great impression during her internship and was hired by the newly opened Aspire Rapid Care Clinic. She enjoys her Medical Assistant position and is thankful for the support she received from her Career Coach, Cindy, and tuition support from GST Michigan Works!
